Welcome to the October round for Food ‘n Flix.
This month, Elizabeth at The Lawyer’s Cookbook is hosting Hocus Pocus.
You can check out her announcement post here.
I have been on a Sex and the City binge-watching extravaganza. (Thanks for adding it, Amazon, to Prime viewing!) Luckily for me, I could take time out to view Hocus Pocus AND still get my Sarah Jessica Parker fix.
I have never seen Hocus Pocus. I agree with so many of the reviews; it is the best Halloween film ever. Truly, what a fun film in true Disney fashion. A mostly family film, with the exception of a few virgin jokes, I enjoyed making time to watch it for this month’s feature. Every year a group of us dress up at school for Halloween. We’ve had a Wizard of Oz theme with flying monkey costumes. Of course, I was the Wicked Witch of the West. This year, we are dressing like the Pink Ladies from Grease. I think at least three of us will be the Sanderson sisters next year.
The Hubs was out of town, it was a dark and stormy night, I started streaming Hocus Pocus…..I needed a cocktail before I settled in.
I settled on a “pumpkintini,” as sort of an ode to Sarah Jessica Parker and her later Cosmopolitan swiggin’ Carrie Bradshaw.

Hocus Pocus Pumpkintini
from Pumpkin Martini1 T. sugar
¼ t. pumpkin pie spice, divided
1 1/2 oz. vodka
2 T. half and half
1 T. pumpkin puree (You may used can or homemade.)*
1 T. pure maple syrup
¼ t. pure vanilla extractCombine the sugar and ⅛ teaspoon of the pumpkin pie spice on a small plate. Dip the rim of a chilled martini glass in water, then dip in the sugar to coat.
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the vodka, half and half, pumpkin puree, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and the remaining ⅛ teaspoon of the pumpkin pie spice. Shake vigorously, then strain into the prepared glass.
*Actually, I used butternut squash puree because I had some in the freezer.
And, as an homage to Billy, the good zombie, I made another drink:

Good Zombie Voodoo Cocktail
based on Blood Sucker Cocktail1 1/2 oz. Don Q Puerto Rican Rum
1/2 oz. triple sec
coconut-pineapple sparkling juice drink (like Simply Balanced from Target)
1 T. strawberry puree
icePlace ice in a rocks glass and add rum and triple sec. Top off with the sparkling juice. Drizzle strawberry puree around the edges of the glass. Serve.
Thanks to Elizabeth at The Lawyer’s Cookbook for hosting this fun film for October.
I honestly don’t know which one I prefer. The Pumpkintini is almost a dessert in a glass. The Zombie Voodoo Cocktail is refreshing and light.
Why not have one of each? I hope you enjoy these potent potables and serve them up for you own Halloween shindig.
Please join us in November for The Hundred Foot Journey hosted by Camilla at Culinary Adventures with Camilla. If you enjoy the film, then grab the novel by Richard Morais and play along at Cook the Books. The deadline for both events is November 30. Click here for more information.
